"... across the gulf of space, minds that are to our minds as ours
are to those of the beasts that perish, intellects vast and cool and
unsympathetic, regarded this earth with envious eyes, and slowly and
surely drew their plans against us."
This book is a lot of fun; although some of the science is outdated,
that really makes no difference - 'War of the Worlds' is an interesting,
entertaining and extremely dramatic read. The tone of the book can be
gauged by the public reaction to Orson Welles' famous 1938 radio dramatization
- it (inadvertently) caused widespread panic. Humanity is powerless
before the superior intellect and technology of the Martians; we follow
the flight of one man as human civilisation is laid waste. Wells writes
beautifully, evocatively and without needless flourishes.
