Theroux, although occasionally lacking in warmth, is one of the most intelligent authors currently writing. 'The Mosquito Coast' is the story of a driven, iconoclastic man, who rejects modern civilisation and drags his family to a 'diseased and dirty Eden' in the Honduran jungle. Isolated from society, he succumbs to paranoid mania. As in most of the novels which I feature, everything goes horribly wrong; their new world darkens, twists and goes mad. Click
