This book - by Graham Greene's favourite writer in the English language - is about an Indian housewife who suffers from horrendously black depressions. Ideal for a Hollywood blockbuster! Hardly the most alluring of teasers, you may think; and maybe 'The Dark Room' isn't for you. For me, however, as someone who has spent time struggling with depression, it was extremely resonant; it evokes with crushing simplicity the goal-less, numb despair which can make one just want to shut down all systems, to go to a dark room and reach a silent truce with unhappiness. It's up to you to decide whether finely-crafted misery is your cup of tea. Click here to buy it ($8.76), or to read more reviews. |
